INTRODUCING: APOLLO
PORTABLE LAMP
Designed for HAY by STUDIO 0405, Apollo is a portable lamp that creates space and intimacy wherever it’s placed. Hand-formed from a single piece of opal glass, Apollo’s warm, ambient glow and portable design make it suitable for using in many spaces – indoors or out. We spoke to STUDIO 0405’s Nikolaj Lorentz Mentze to learn about his design process.
BEHIND THE DESIGN
In addition to classic lamp forms, Apollo was also inspired by its namesake – it was originally designed as an oil lamp for acclaimed Copenhagen restaurant Apollo Bar & Kantine. “It’s a freestanding lamp that draws the light down and gives life to the table,” Mentze says. “The shape refers to a recognizable archetype that feels somewhat unfinished and still emphasizes the essence of a lamp.”
THE HANDMADE PROCESS
“The lamp is blown in one piece of opal glass, which builds on an ancient technique passed down and refined over many centuries. A skilled glassblower can weigh the glass with the eye and blow up a lamp in one piece by using a wooden mold to help the lamp take shape.”
