Poul M. Volther

First trained as a cabinetmaker, Danish designer Poul M. Volther (1923-2001) studied furniture design at the Arts and Crafts School in Copenhagen. In 1950, he became head of the furniture company FDB Møbler’s design studio, taking over the position from designer Børge Mogensen. Part of a generation of Danish designers who practiced Scandinavian functionalism, Volther focused on purpose, quality, and form in his works – as evidenced in the timeless J110 Armchair, relaunched by HAY.
